Known as the "little man with the big heart", his strong will for competitiveness never stopped even when he a fall during one of his Olympic trials. He had a run of bad luck during his first years of competing. In 1978 he ran his 10,000 meter trial placing eleventh and fourth in the 5,000 meter run. In 1980 he collapsed in the last 200 meters of his 10,000 race suffering from heat and dehydrationafter recovering he was able to place seventh in the 5,000 meter race. In 1983 Treacy was eliminated from the 10,000 heat making him unqualified to compete in the race itself. Finally in 1984 he placed ninth in the 10,000 meter final. He still competed after the Olympics and is now the Chief Executive of The Irish Sports Council.
